Often shower commode chairs are perceived as an off-the- shelf, one-size-fits-all device. In this course, we will look at the person and identify key areas where customizing a mobile shower commode chair can maximize client outcomes. Including maintaining skin integrity, reinforcing appropriate positioning, identifying key anatomical landmarks, taking accurate measurements of the client, and identifying the ideal features required to optimize function.
The geriatric client can be easily overlooked as one who could benefit from a custom fitting, ultralightweight, adjustable manual wheelchair. They are too often provided the “basic” wheelchair without much thought. This course with review normal physiological changes that come with aging, and how proper wheelchair seating, base selection, fitting, and set up, can be justified for the geriatric client.
Course Overview: This one-hour course is intended to help clinicians and providers expand on their current knowledge and skills to achieve greater success and clinical confidence with manual wheelchair provision. Through mobility user case examples linked to key clinical concepts and research, as well as practical applications of equipment intervention, it will also examine the role of the wheelchair provision process within the larger context of the rehabilitation. Highlighted within the course will be the importance of individualized goals and assessments.
This course will cover concepts related to various types of manual wheelchair users and propulsion styles. Upon completion, participants will be able to adapt and apply the clinical reasoning and practical application skills gained to improve outcomes and enhance client function in a variety of settings.
